Chapter Twenty

I

t had been a long day. Erin was relaxing on the couch watching TV and dozing on Terry’s shoulder when the back door slammed open, and Erin just about rocketed out of her seat. Terry was on his feet right behind her.

Vic strode through the kitchen and had started her tirade before she even reached the living room.

“What is wrong with men?” she demanded. She saw Terry. “No offense, Terry, but why do men have to be so thick-skulled? Is it in the rule book? Can’t they listen and be sensible? Why do they have to always be right about everything?”

Erin’s heart was still racing. She tried to calm herself down. Whatever was bothering Vic, it wasn’t a real emergency. She wasn’t being chased or attacked. She was just riled up about something that Willie had done. She swallowed and tried to answer Vic calmly.

“What happened?”

“Nothing happened. And nothing is going to happen if he is going to keep being so hard-headed and acting like he can’t trust me! What have I ever done to make him think I would be unfaithful to him? I’ve never given him any reason to think that I would wander!”

“I know,” Erin soothed. “I don’t know what happened, but it will blow over. The two of you are just… passionate. You’re going to butt heads sometimes. But you love Willie, and he loves you, the two of you can work it out…”

“I’m prepared to be reasonable. He is the one who isn’t! I’m perfectly happy to talk things through and work them out.”

“What exactly is bothering him?” Terry asked. He sat back down on the couch where he had been before Vic’s dramatic entrance. He put his feet up on the coffee table, and Vic shook her head at him.

“What?” Terry demanded. “I don’t have my shoes on and this isn’t your coffee table. It’s Erin’s, and if it doesn’t bother her, you don’t need to act like I’ve committed a capital offense.”

“It’s not that.” Vic shook her head, rolling her eyes at her own response. “I’m just wound up. It’s not you. I need to talk to Erin. Someone who understands.”

“Come to the bedroom,” Erin invited. “You can say whatever you like without being overheard.” She glanced over at Terry. “As long as you lower your voice. You are… a mite loud.”

Terry snorted. He didn’t offer to be the one to leave the room so that they could talk in private. He was in the middle of watching a show, and there wasn’t a TV in the bedroom, so Erin couldn’t very well insist.

“Come on,” she repeated, motioning to Vic.

Vic followed her down the hall to the bedroom and, once she was in, Erin shut the door. Vic threw herself down on the bed, sprawling on her back, and groaned loudly.

“Can I go back to being a kid again? I’m tired of dealing with relationship crap. I want to go back to just… making mud pies and shooting squirrels.”

“I don’t think you’d better be shooting anything while you’re in this mood.
